Pride, Inclusion, and the Power of Belonging

29 June 2026

Across workplaces, communities, and public spaces, people are increasingly seeking environments where they feel respected, included, and safe to be themselves. The extent to which individuals experience that sense of inclusion and belonging shapes not only their own well-being, but also the strength of our extended communities and institutions.

For NLC, a commitment towards inclusion and belonging is reflected in how we show up every day, in how people are treated, and how differences are respected. Where inclusivity is about opening the door, belonging is about ensuring people feel welcome once they walk through it. When employees feel supported and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work, they are better able to contribute, collaborate, and serve customers. When customers feel welcomed and accepted, trust grows, relationships strengthen, and communities benefit.

Pride comes to mind as a clear example of the importance of inclusion and belonging, and how organizations can play a role in creating environments where people feel safe, valued and able to be themselves. We have been fortunate to work with and learn from outstanding community organizations, including Quadrangle NL, whose work has played a key role in building community capacity and ensuring that members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Newfoundland and Labrador have access to programs and spaces where they can be supported and thrive.

Through Quadrangle NL’s guidance and collaboration, we have engaged in important conversations about allyship, inclusion, and the role each of us plays in fostering respectful environments. We have also strengthened our staff training to promote inclusive language and practices, helping to create spaces where customers and employees feel welcomed, supported, and respected. These efforts continue to inform our learning and shape how inclusion is reflected in both our workplace practices and customer experiences.

Access to affirming services also plays a vital role in both well-being and belonging. Through a partnership between Quadrangle NL and the Jacob Puddister Memorial Foundation, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals across Newfoundland and Labrador have access to a free mental health counselling line staffed by 2SLGBTQIA+ counsellors. By providing funding for important initiatives like this, we are helping expand access to affirming and responsive care while fostering connection, well-being, and belonging in communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate inclusion and belonging alongside the communities we serve. Throughout the month of June and beyond, we stand in solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, families, friends, and allies, supporting Pride initiatives across the province. For many of our employees, participating in Pride celebrations is an opportunity to demonstrate support, build connections, and celebrate the diversity that exists within our workplaces and communities. For others, it is about being seen, supported, and represented. Whether through participation in a parade, engagement at community events, or everyday acts of allyship, these moments contribute to a deeper sense of belonging for all.

Importantly, these partnerships also provide opportunities to listen. They help us better understand the experiences of employees, customers, and community members, while strengthening relationships built on trust and mutual respect, and reminding us that creating inclusive communities is a shared effort that benefits everyone.

We recognize that Pride carries a deeper significance in reflecting both the progress that has been made, and the work that remains to ensure everyone can live openly and authentically without fear of discrimination or exclusion. Pride serves as a visible reminder of why inclusion and belonging must continue to be actively supported in our workplaces and communities. At a time when many people are looking for connection, understanding, and a sense of belonging, this work matters more than ever. As we move forward, NLC’s commitment remains focused on creating environments where people feel safe, heard, and able to contribute fully. When we do this thoughtfully and with intention, we build trust with the people we serve while strengthening the workplaces, communities, and relationships that connect us.
