At NLC, we believe that giving back to communities is a core responsibility. In 2023, we deepened this commitment by placing a renewed focus on community investment as a core pillar of our broader approach to corporate social responsibility. Through this pillar, our team of over 600 staff from across the organization are united by a common goal: to come Together with Purpose and make a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.
Through employee giving, corporate campaigns, and local community funding, we are proud to support causes that reflect our values and work with organizations that are addressing real needs in our communities.
Our employees play a vital role in shaping our community impact. In redeveloping our community investment programs, it was important that we turned to our employees for insight. This approach reflects our belief that the most effective community investment happens when it is informed by the people closest to it. Our employees live and work in the communities we serve. By creating space for their input, we aim to build a culture of giving that is inclusive and personal, where our people feel connected to the difference they’re helping to make.
Through our employee giving payroll program, staff are not only encouraged to give back, but they also collectively help guide where the support goes, ensuring the causes selected truly reflect what matters in our communities. Last fiscal year*, this collective commitment was clearly demonstrated through employee support for the Canadian Red Cross NL Wildfire Relief Fund. At a time when wildfires were top of mind for many in the province, our employees responded to support those affected when it was needed most.
The impact of our people extends beyond financial contributions. Throughout last fiscal year, our teams gave their time, energy, and care to a wide range of initiatives. They packed backpacks for students heading into a new school year, assembled food hampers for individuals and families facing food insecurity and showed up in support of important causes across the province. Employees walked together in the Red Shoe Crew Walk for Families, volunteered at local fundraisers, and proudly participated in Pride festivities, demonstrating our shared commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community well-being.
These efforts reinforce the values that define us as an organization and remind us that impact is not only measured in dollars, but in the time we give, the causes we stand behind, and the difference we make together.

With 27 retail locations across the province, we recognize the importance of using our footprint to contribute positively to the communities we serve. This includes ensuring that we are giving back at the local level in meaningful and tangible ways.
Our Community Donations program provides contributions of $1,000 to registered charities and non-profit organizations that are addressing critical needs directly within their communities. To date, $40,000 has been invested in local organizations supporting a wide range of initiatives that strengthen community well-being. These include programs focused on social responsibility, food security, mental health and community wellness, diversity, inclusion and belonging, as well as environmental sustainability. Through this program, we are proud to support the dedicated organizations working on the ground to create lasting, positive impact across the province.
Giving back at the local level can also extend beyond individual communities to create greater impact throughout the province. We have been fortunate to support charities with a provincial reach through our in-store corporate giving campaigns, helping to amplify their work and extend their impact across all parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. Of course, this effort would not be possible without the combined support of many individuals and teams working together for a common purpose. Thanks to the generosity of our customers, along with the support of our supplier partners and dedicated staff, we have raised essential funds for key causes in the province including mental health, food security, and youth programs. Last fiscal year alone, we collectively raised over $458,000 in support of organizations making a meaningful difference in communities and families across Newfoundland and Labrador, including Kids Eat Smart Foundation NL, Ronald McDonald House Charities NL, and Community Food Sharing Association.
We are deeply grateful to our customers, supplier partners, and staff whose collective generosity and commitment make this work possible, and we look forward to building on the positive impact made in the years ahead.
In December, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that remaining inventory of U.S.-produced products would be returned to store shelves, with net proceeds directed to support the Community Food Sharing Association. An initial $500,000 donation was made in December, with the total contribution expected to reach approximately $1 million upon the sale of all remaining product.
At its core, our approach to community giving is about connection. It’s about bringing together employees, customers, supplier partners and community partners to support causes that matter and create positive change.
We are grateful to be able to contribute in a meaningful way, alongside the communities, partners, and individuals who bring these efforts to life.
Together, we are helping to build stronger, more resilient communities, one act of giving at a time.
